2012 Wrangler Repair Guide
Okay, so I did Teh Google, I browsed the My Jeep section on the Jeep.com website, I went to TechAuthority, and I'll be a flightless waterfowl if I can't find a place anywhere in all that to get a factory service manual for my brand new 2012 Wrangler Rubicon. When I bought my LJ, I don't remember it being anywhere near this hard to get a manual, there was a web address and a phone number in the back of the owner's manual and you went there and there was the FSM. But all the links I find now go to TechAuthority.com, and there is nothing - nada - zilch - there about a service manual set, cd, DVD, or anything that I can find. Next thing will be to call the TechAuthority number at 1–800–890–4038 (U.S.), I suppose. But that has to wait until tomorrow. Meanwhile, Hyundai has all their factory service manuals AND all their TSB's for every single one of their cars online, And you wonder why the foreign makes are kicking American makes' rear when it comes to designing and selling cars? American makes are still run by the same sort of penny-penching Scrooges who let a buncha people burn to death in Pintos rather than spend 98 cents per car on a simple plastic isolation fitting, not by folks who care about customer service and customer satisfaction. I have a friend who's into the whole 'ricer' thing, and Hyundais are the new 'in' thing for the 'ricers'. Especially the sportier ones with the 2.0T engines, which they've apparently figured out ways to get a.lot. more horsepower out of that turbocharged engine.
And yes, the 'ricers' do most of their own wrenching. And the fact that Hyundai is so wrenching-friendly, indeed seems to actually.encourage. wrenching your ride, is one of the reasons why they're moving up quickly in the street racing (and street racing wannabe ) world. Okay, it appears that if you want access to the FSM, you must pay $10/day at TechAuthority.com for access via the Internet, with a 3-day minimum. Does anybody know whether you can print sections of the manual? It'd be ridiculous to have to log in to their server every time you wanted to change your friggin' oil. My paper FSM for my 2006 LJ is in the recovery gear box in the back of the Jeep.
This new Chrysler policy might make sense for a minivan where the only time you're going to work on it is in a garage with Internet access, but it's ridiculous for a Jeep where you might be halfway down the Rubicon Trail with the nearest Internet access a full day's travel away. But hey, it's the new old era for American automakers. There's still some customers they haven't serviced yet, but don't worry, they're getting to it, like a stallion in a pasture full of mares. Do you feel well and good serviced yet? Chrysler is locking everything down now. I tried to see if I could buy a starscan tool for my own JK even, only to find out ever since Fiat took over, they outmoded the starscan tools, went to witech and only allow dealer tech's to even use the database for the new Witech diagnostic units Techauthority only has user manuals and body repair/parts catalogs, but no FSMs (for later JKs made 2010+) For those that get access to the later FSMs, printscreen the hell out of them!
I am hoping they will release the FSM in a few years or so. You can partially thank the 'green' movement. I'm a techincal writer in the rail transit industry, and a lot of the car builders (for train cars) are going to electronic-only end user delivery systems (I write the manuals for trains).
Meaning the service manager has the computer with an interactive service manual or illustration parts catalog and only prints off the pages in the work order necessary to do that particular job. In the future, perhaps currently for higher-end facilities, each master technician will have a computer that s/he can access the information from so they don't have to go to the manager every time they need a torque spec. They are doing this to cut down on publishing costs, help earn 'green' ratings, and keeping proprietary information from leaking through outsourced work (formatting, publishing, binding, etc.). Sucks for us because usually the end user documentation requires a proprietary software application to view and interact — it's not just interlinked PDFs anymore. Hopefully Chrylser/Fiat will make an electronic consumer version available in a year or so, but I have no idea if this is in the works: I wouldn't hold your breath. That explains why folks are going electronic, but not why Chrysler has no program for individuals who just want to work on their own car. The subscription price for a year's worth of TechAuthority is cheaper than buying the service manuals for all recent Jeep products if you're a mechanic specializing in fixing Jeeps, but is not appropriate if you just need one specific manual for one specific Jeep (your own).
Alldata has a 'For One Car' subscription service aimed at the DIY set for one vehicle that's far more affordable than the full Alldata, but Chrysler thus far has not authorized them to offer this service for post-2010 Jeeps. If you want to know why Detroit is fighting Right To Repair tooth and claw, now you know. It appears that the only thing that can change this situation is if a big state like California or New York passes a law forcing automakers to use a standard set of diagnostic tools so you don't have to go to the dealership just to reset the #$%!@ low tire pressure sensor and provide end users with access to the dealership information without paying for a subscription to information on.all. cars sold by that manufacturer (note that 99% of what's on TechAuthority is of no interest to me, so why do I have to pay for access to that material as well as for material on my own specific Jeep?). It happened before - we now have OBD-II scanners because the State of California mandated that all cars would be equipped with OBD-II rather than with the dozens of different special tools and code scanners that predated OBD-II - but now you know why we have Big Government - because we also have Big Business trying to rip us off left and right.

If only everybody would behave like reasonable people with common decency and ethics, we wouldn't need government. Unfortunately, our business schools are turning out immoral, unethical lizard people from Planet Sociopath who view customers as prey, not as human beings, and they're running our big corporations like the Detroit automakers.
